Double-ended ferries - the optimum solution for any application
The Voith Schneider Propeller - the cornerstone of all "floating-bridge" operations - is an ideal solution for the demanding requirements of modern ferries in terms of economy, reliability and safety. The major advantages:
- Double-ended ferries do not have to turn in port.
- Vehicles can leave the ferry in the same direction as they drove on.
This ship concept saves time and therefore money. The propellers on double-ended ferries can be arranged to best suit the specific application:
- standard version with two VSPs on the ship's centre line
- four VSPs for high power requirements and/or if there are restrictions on draught
- three VSPs if there is a preferential direction of travel
- two VSPs arranged diagonally for small ferries
The Voith Schneider ropeller was first used on a double-ended ferry in 1937. This was the "Lymington" in Great Britain, which remained in service for over 60 years as the "Sound of Sanda".
Since then, over 380 ferries fitted with VSPs have been operating successfully on many important ferry routes, and include the largest and most powerful double-ended ferries in the world.
