Fully maneuverable.
When precision maneuvering and positioning are the top priority rather than covering long distances quickly, Voith Schneider Propellers are the better choice: for safe passenger operations on busy rivers and waters with difficult navigation channels.
The VSP's advantages for commercial vessels are particularly evident at sea, in port and offshore:
- oceanographic research ships use the Voith Schneider Propulsion system
- floating cranes operating without external assistance rely on their VSPs
- drilling ships can be positioned dynamically and accurately; cable layers stay precisely on course.
An interesting development that exploits the advantages of the VSP to the full is the Bow Steering Module (BSM) at the head of barge trains, in some cases radio-controlled by the pusher boat and thus operated without a helmsman. With this configuration, even extremely large groups can be pushed safely.
