January 2008 - Voith Turbo Wind Among the Finalists for the "Innovation Prize in German Industry"
Based on its newly developed WinDrive technology, Voith Turbo Wind GmbH & Co. KG is a finalist being considered for the "Innovation Prize in German Industry". During the festivities held on January 19 at the "Alte Oper" (Old Opera House) in Frankfurt, the WinDrive was recognized as the most innovative drive system for wind power plants and selected as one of the 5 finalists from the original 269 contestants. Established at the beginning of 2007, Voith Turbo Wind GmbH & Co. KG submitted the WinDrive in the "Start-up Companies" category.
The "Innovation Prize in German Industry" has been in existence since 1980. It enjoys patent protection as the "First Innovation Prize in the World". The panel of experts, which includes among others Prof. Dr. Lothar Späth and Dr. Heinrich von Pierer, awards the prize each year to a company for its outstanding innovation. Only companies whose developments and products have demonstrated significant advances over current technology have an opportunity to win. The honor of being selected to the final 5 was presented to Dr. Andreas Basteck, CEO of Voith Turbo Wind GmbH & Co. and confirms the commitment and engagement of the entire Voith Group when it comes to innovation and new technologies. |

January 2008 - WinDrive in the highest located Wind Turbine of the world
The WinDrive makes history (breaking new records): again the WinDrive shows its strength in the highest installed wind turbine in the world, at 4,200m (2.61 miles!) above sea level. The 2 MW wind turbine delivers the power supply to the Goldmine Veladero owned by the Barrick company in the Andes mountains of Argentina. Extreme environmental conditions require very special demands on the complete drive train in the nacelle. Conventional wind turbines use frequency converters, which include electronic components such as capacitors and semi conductors. Those components are troublesome due to the decreased air pressure at the height of 4,200m as well as the dominant rough weather and climate conditions. Best possible economical and reliable operation can not be reached with common technology. Due to its robustness and large application range the WinDrive is the optimal solution for this high-demand application.

| February 2008 - Life Cycle test passed
Target of the Life Cycle Test is the validation of the specified design life cycle of 20 years, 175.000 hours, based on a 500 hours test. Within the 500 hours, all load and stress situations are performed even harder then in a real life cycle field operation.
- (20h) Over speed greater 150 % in compliance with a 20 years gust specification
- 200 times play at cycle time of 365s
- (80h) Alternating powered and generating operation.
- 288.000 times play, with cycle time of 1s (same as every half hour synchronizing process in real life)
- (200h) Micro pitting for high loads and low movement between the tooth flanks.
- 72.000 times, cycle time of 10s (that means every 2,5 hours a gust stronger than normal cut off point)
- (200h) 150% Of nominal input torque with 0,5 Hz
- 144.000 times, cycle time 5s
- Maximum torque test is still running
- 10 times, 2 min., cycle time 10s
Results:
The results of the Life Cycle Test proof, that design and manufacturing process of the WinDrive are absolutely capable for the specified 20 years life cycle: - The WinDrive bears up 5.400 kW - The WinDrive bears up 150% over speed - Absolutely no damages or wear up marks. |

December 2008 - 2 MW wind turbine with WinDrive goes on line in the USA
Another 2 MW wind turbine type DeWind 8.2. is erected in Pipestone County, Minnesota (USA) and will produce power by the end of the month. The customer is Hilltop Power LLC. After the excellent operational performance of the installed plants in Germany, Argentina and the USA the wind turbine is expected to perform without any difficulties. |
